New HBO teen drama Euphoria has already received a great deal of attention since it premiered on Sunday night for the show's uncompromising and explicit depiction of sex, drugs and nudity among high school students. Former Disney Channel star Zendaya grabbed most headlines for her lead role as recovering drug addict Rue, but it is her friend Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, who was the breakout star of the episode and who was also involved in the pilot's two most shocking scenes. If the name Hunter Schafer is familiar, it might be because the year-old has already made waves as a fashion model and LGBT rights activist.
As mainstream America becomes more familiar with the unique journeys transgender people take, both through their increased visibility in media and entertainment and the fraught political debates around the rights we afford and deny them, it's still absolutely essential that trans people tell their own stories, in their own voices.
It was an ideal solution: Young girls were comfortable, and transgender students still had access to gender-neutral bathrooms. This battle is being fought in schools across the country. The latest battleground is in the suburbs of Chicago, where a school board recently voted to eliminate sex-segregated spaces in schools.
